Water‐assisted melt processing of cellulose biocomposites with poly(ε‐caprolactone) or poly(ethylene‐acrylic acid) for the production of carton screw caps

Composites in 25 kg batches were compounded of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and thermomechanical pulp (TMP) shaped into caps at industrial facilities on a pilot-plant scale. Some the material was also injection molded plaques to compare effect laboratory-scale pilot-scale compounding poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA7) poly(caprolactone) composites reinforced with 10 wt% CNC TMP. The materials under conditions showed different morphology, improved mechanical properties, higher viscosity, than pilot-scale. In some cases, rheological properties melts indicated presence relatively strong percolating cellulosic network, interphase region between matrix appears be important for performance composites. After pilot scale, both length width fibers reduced. TMP provided better reinforcement possibly due aspect ratio.
